Wintertime energy saving tips:
As the forecast calls for extreme winter weather to arrive in the coming days, here are some tips to help you stay safe and conserve energy:
• Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 58 degrees when you are away from home. Schedule temperature adjustments for optimal efficiency by installing a programmable thermostat.
• Zone heating: Heat only the rooms you use frequently. Ask your HVAC professional about a multi-thermostat damper system.
• Reduce your shower or bath time.
• Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees.
• Do not use a pool heater.
• Operate your clothes washer, dryer, and dishwasher only when fully loaded.
• Unless a fire is burning, close your fireplace damper to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney.
• Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal gaps around windows, doors, and vents.
• And, in the wintertime, set ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to push warm air down.
• Insulate your home: Add insulation to your attic, walls, and floors to prevent heat loss.
• LED lights use significantly less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs.
• Make it a habit to switch off lights when leaving a room.
• Open blinds and curtains during the day to light and warm your home.
• Upgrade to energy-efficient windows: Double or triple-glazed windows reduce heat transfer.
• Adjust light intensity and limit unnecessary usage by using dimmers and timers.
• Turn off and unplug chargers, TVs, and other electronics when not in use.
• Smart power strips cut power to devices in standby mode.
• Clean refrigerator coils and replace HVAC filters to keep appliances running efficiently.
• Cook with lids on pots; trapping heat reduces cooking time and energy use.
• Opt for a microwave, toaster oven, or slow cooker instead of your stove or oven.
• Avoid energy-intensive microwave defrosting by defrosting food in advance.
• Replace old appliances: Look for ENERGY STAR-certified models.
• Use low-flow shower heads and faucets to reduce water heating needs.
• A dripping faucet or leaking pipe wastes both water and energy.
• Wear warmer clothing at home to reduce reliance on heating.
• Use renewable energy for heating, cooling, and electricity by installing solar panels.
